Oboe Orchestral Excerpts – Audition Preparation

Description:

    

This class will explore four common orchestral excerpts frequently asked on professional auditions.  While listening to students play these excerpts we will look at how to prepare them convincingly and confidently.  We will discuss practice techniques, developing technical fluency, dealing with nervousness and other aspects of physical and mental preparation for orchestral auditions.

Bert Lucarelli (Oboe)

Title:

Presenting Solo Oboe Repertoire from the Perspective of a Soloist

Description:

Bert Lucarelli, cited by the New York Times as “Americas leading oboe recitalist” will conduct a masterclass exploring the world of solo playing – including the fundamentals of oboe playing as they relate to expressing and engaging an audience with the magic of the drama and hisotry of the music being performed.  How to meet the challenge of keeping an audience interested for a two hour recital through programming, commitment and dedication to quality with concentration.  As an orchestral player until his 40th year, Mr. Lucarelli brings a unique perspective of the joy of being an orchestral perfomer as well as having developed a career as one of Americas’ most recorded oboists.

Guy Porat (Oboe)

Title:

The Martinu Oboe Concerto

Description:

    

Guy Porat has dedicated the last 9 years for the study of the Martinu Oboe Concerto.  He carefully studied all the relevant sources and together with Prof. Maurice Bourgue edited the New Edition of the concerto, which received praise from the press.  Tonight's Gala Opening Concert will inaugurate the new performance material of the concerto – score and orchestral parts.   Having edited the critical edition of the piece, Mr. Porat is in a position to offer invaluable insight to it.  While the New Edition offers elaborate information in the Editorial Notes, this Masterclass will offer participants an opportunity to explore interpretational issues, and to examine this great concerto in depth.

Challenging Excerpts from the Oboe Chamber Music Repertoire

Description:

    

This master class will explore representative excerpts from standard chamber music repertoire for oboe with emphasis on approaches to overcoming frequently encountered stylistic and technical problems.

Marc Schaeferdiek (Oboe)

Title:

Foundations of Oboe Playing

Description:

    

Lesson: Practical Tips for Improving Performance

Basics:  Posture – Breathing – Resonance – Vibrato – Finger Position

In addition to working on musical and artistic elements, daily practice of technique should be foremost of the practice-plan.  If you wish to have true artistic freedom, this is an essential basis.

Title:

Phrasing and Articulation in Classical Oboe Concertos

Description:

    

We will work on individual solutions to improve the classical phrasing.  Searching for connections between articulation, breathing and the body for a free and flexible oboe playing.

Participants:

3 students – 25 minutes each

Any classical oboe concerto (Mozart, Haydn, Leburn, etc.)

Description:  

Preparation and execution of contrabassoon excerpts for an orchestral audition.  Participants may feel free to bring any additional contra excerpts or solo works that may also be required for an audition.

Playing in Unison

Description:

    

Focusing on technical and non-technical aspects that can allow for better unison playing.  Also, some attention given to playing “unaccompanied” where playing in unison with one’s self becomes the focus.

Baroque Performance Masterclass

Description:

    

This session will focus on refinement of articulation and ornamentation of solo bassoon repertoire from 1650 to 1740 (+/-).

Yoshihide Kiryu (Bassoon)

Title:

Linguistics of Embouchure, the effect of native language on the bassoon embouchure and articulation

Description:

The master class will investigate how the native language of the player affects his bassoon embouchure and ability to articulate. The native language of each student will be explored and analyzed, and suggestions will be made to further enhance each student’s embouchure and articulation.

Frank Morelli (Bassoon)

Title:

Weber’s Bassoon Concerto: “Putting New Life Into an Old Warhorse”

Description:

    

Mr. Morelli will work with three young artists, each performing one movement of the concerto.  Learning to transcend the instrument and studying the approach of non-bassoon playing solo artists and vocalists performing comparable repertoire will be explored.
