Engaging the Next Generation: Foundations of Oboe Playing – Geoff Coates and William Ring

|

A major UK initiative was launched at IDRS 2009 to promote oboe and bassoon learning to young people, with the aims of increasing and ensuring consistent high quality double reed learning in UK schools and music services. The venture aims to share successful practices and resources, undertake relevant research, and promote double-reed playing to young people in innovative and relevant ways. Partners include some of the UK's top teachers, the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the oboe maker and double-reed specialist company Howarth of London. This presentation will highlight some successes to date, including audio-visual evidence of recent UK work and a live link up to the LSO's base in London. The approaches behind these successes - including double-reed events, mentoring schemes, innovative engagement and options for starting younger children - will be explored and there will be discussion of how these might be applied within the US instrumental learning system, given the challenges presented by the "bands system". The session will include a presentation of research material, the demonstration of junior instruments and the collaboration of delegates in open discussion.
